Barry Ivker
Artist Biography:

BerryBarry Ivker was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1941. He earned his BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962, and his MA and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Indiana University (1964-1968) . He taught in the Comparative Literature Department in Indiana University (1966-1967), the English department at Butler University (Indianapolis)1967-1968, the English department at Dillard University (New Orleans) 1968-1979 and the English department of Xavier University (New Orleans) 1988-1993.

Work in the medium of collage began in 1971. Since that time he has had one-person shows at Nicholls State University (Thibodaux, LA), the Jewish Community Center in New Orleans (4 times) and the Jewish Community Center in Cleveland, OH. He has had shows at the Cultural Center in Netanya, Israel, and at the Art Center of Holland, Michigan. In 2002, thirteen of his works were exhibited at the New Orleans Museum of Art; and his works have been exhibited in Colorado, Indiana, Texas, South Carolina, and New York.

In 2000, he published a Haggadh with 111 original illustrations. Illustrations have been completed for the book of Ruth (20), the book of Esther (93 illustrations), and the Song of Songs (79 illustrations). Thirteen works based on the children of Jacob are on permanent exhibit at Shir Chadash Conservative Synagogue in New Orleans. Other works are part of the collection of Temple Sinai in New orleans, Anshei Sfard in New Orleans, the Chabad House in New Orleans, and the Rehabilitation Center of Touro Hospital. There are completed series on 9/11 (18 works) and the Second Intefada (36 works). He is currently working on post-Katrina series -- miniature (12" by 12").

In addition to art, he had persued interest in Chamber Music (plays piano and harpsichord), choral and cantorial music, international folk dancing, Cajun and contra dancing, and writing (plays, poetry, children's stories).

He earned a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work in 1979 and has been a practicing psychotherapist since that time.
